蔡英文總統與美國總統當選人川普通電話的消息傳出後，引發國際高度關注。《紐約時報》指出，此舉讓台灣在中美關係上「重返檯面、驚動區域」，並引述美國前駐中大使洪博培（Jon M. Huntsman）的看法認為，台灣將成為美中關係更重要的議題；商人性格的川普，可能把台灣視為「槓桿支點」。
《紐時》稱，過去20年，台灣不是中美關係的引爆點，當歐巴馬、習近平會面時，首要角力的議題是貿易、網路駭客、南海，之後才是台灣；台中開公司費用但蔡川通電話之後，就把台灣重新「擱回檯面」。
報導引述白宮資深官員看法，認為亞洲幾國的駐美使節，均因此事對白宮表達關切。歐巴馬政府官員擔心，短期之內，川普的舉動將攪動整個區域；長期而言，可能造成台海局勢緊張，或加劇中美貿易緊張關係，也可能讓大陸在南海更膽大妄為。
前美國駐聯合國大使約翰．波頓則表示：「北京的任何人都不能決定我們可以跟誰交談。認為這次電話通話破壞了幾十年的什麼事務的說法，是可笑的。」波頓認為，如果美國總統認為他與誰交談符合美國的最佳利益，他就應當能夠與任何外國領導人交談。
中央社報導，美國前副總統錢尼的國安顧問葉望輝說，美國總統當選人川普和總統蔡英文一通簡單有禮、不一定會改變政策的電話，卻引起這麼多焦慮與屈服，凸顯美中政策已多荒謬。
